MLK Weekend Project ‘10 Roosevelt Senior High School

KAYA DC members will be out this weekend and on Monday helping out at Roosevelt Senior High School for MLK Day of Service. Hope you can join us!

The L10 Project is a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to bringing awareness to and helping close the academic achievement gap. Simply put, we educate organizations, individuals and communities about the issues surrounding the academic achievement gap and then empower and encourage change and action through school revitalization projects in the U.S. and Caribbean.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The school repair and revitalization project at Roosevelt Senior High school will take place during the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in Washington DC. This high school was once the cornerstone of the Ward 4 community in Washington DC, however, after decades of neglect, it is often mistaken as a vacant building instead of an institution of learning. To accomplish the rehabilitation, we will mobilize over 500 community members to participate in a series of revitalization projects, including: library refurbishing, painting, cleaning, weeding and supply donations. These improvements will not only increase school pride and morale for staff and students, but also educate community participants in a very real way about the obstacles and issues inherent to academic equality.  Organization partners include George Washington University, students groups from Howard University, Delta Sigma Theta Inc., Roosevelt High students, staff, and parents, Ward 4 residents, and Councilmember Muriel Bowser’s office.

  • School Wide Painting (10 Teams)
  • School Wide Cleaning (10 Teams)
  • Library Renewal
  • Teachers Lounge Renewal
  • Murals (5 Teams)
  • Basic Repair
  • Graffiti Removal (5 Teams)

TIMELINE

Saturday, January 16th

FOR PROJECT LEADERS ONLY

9:30am – 10:00am – Arrival

10:00am – 11:00am – Projects Overview, Q&A, and Tour

11:00am – 1:00pm – Project Staging (GW student leaders may leave starting at noon)

Monday, January 18th

FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS

9:30am – 10:30am – Arrival

10:30am – 11:00am – Opening Remarks

11:00am – 12:00pm – Service Projects

12:00pm – 1:00pm – Lunch (teams will be dismissed in this timeframe, lunch is slotted for 30min. Lunch will be sold by various vendors).

1:00pm – 2:30pm – Service Projects

2:30pm – 3:00pm – Closing Remarks

3:00pm – 5:00pm – Project Area Cleanup
