Job Description for Associate Director
Position Overview
The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), AFL-CIO seeks a full-time
Associate Director that will oversee the program design & implementation of all
existing programs, including, but not limited to the Organizing Institute, Every
Vote Counts political program, and local workers’ rights hearings.
The Associate Director will also manage the internal operations of the national
office, provide administrative support and, in conjunction with the Executive
Director, National Executive Board & chapter leadership, implement a national
membership mobilization campaign and engage the membership in all APALA
programs.
This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the APALA Executive
Director. Nights and weekends may be required. The primary responsibilities
of the Associate Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

Program Design & Implementation:
1. Oversee all existing programs, including, but not limited to the
Organizing Institute, Every Vote Counts political program and local
workers’ rights hearings; and
2. Develop innovative programs that advance the mission of the
organization, with consultation from the Executive Director & National
Executive Board (NEB).
Communications:
1. Enhance communications program that includes the following
components:
a. Maintain APALA web site;
b. Produce press advisories & releases on an as needed basis; and
c. Maintain APALA Facebook page and Twitter account.
2. Produce educational fact sheets, and other relevant materials; and
3. Produce monthly electronic newsletter, in conjunction with
Communications Consultant.
Membership & Chapter Engagement:
1. Support the implementation of a national membership mobilization
campaign, in consultation with NEB and chapter leadership;
2. Act as liaison with chapter leaders and support chapter involvement in
national campaigns; and
3. Participate in the planning and coordination of APALA’s Biennial
Convention.
Internal Operations Support:
1. Supervise office operations;
2. Process membership; and
3. Oversee financial operations:
a. Coordinate annual audit;
b. Manage payroll and payment of external contractors; and
c. Process contributions.
Desired Skills & Experience
1. A record of activism on behalf of workers, the community or other
groups engaged in the pursuit of social and economic justice;
2. BA or BS degree in political science, labor relations, or equivalent work
or education-related experience;
3. Knowledge of Asian Pacific American communities and the labor
movement;
4. Strong interpersonal, writing & oral skills, with the ability to
communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse range of
people;
5. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively; and
6. Strong computer and technical skills.
